Our Why

In May 2010, reporter Jennifer Moxley covered a free hearing aid event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. The original family to interview fell through so a Starkey Hearing Aid employee pointed out Australia-born Zahra Baker and said, "She lost her hearing and her leg to cancer. When kids make fun of her she says a crocodile bit it off."  Moxley met and interviewed both Zahra and a woman who identified herself as her mother. We would later learn it was her stepmother Elisa Baker.

In October 2010, an AMBER alert caught Moxley's attention, something was familiar- it was the same little girl from the Speedway.

For the next year, Zahra Baker's story would be covered around the world.  Moxley saw how so many external influences shaped how Zahra's story was told, what was told, and the way Zahra's death investigation case was handled. The Damaged Petals docu-series is in the fundraising stage of production and will include 12 chapters exploring each influential element: from the Town of Hickory where it all began to Nancy Grace.
